Synopsis: This presentation will draw positive attention to the value of understanding and applying active learning throughout the online course. Students are in a learning continuum and we are engaging them in many different ways. Applying active learning methods and strategies helps further students success. Active learning fosters learning, comprehension and application. It helps us transfer content and to provide a meaningful and gratifying learning experience for our students. We will present an exciting, insightful and interesting presentation that covers active learning theory. The four active learning methods will be presented along with examples of how they apply. We will then summarize and discuss how we apply active learning strategies and connect them into our on-line classroom. We will also explain various active learning strategies and help instructors recognize how they can be applied in an online classroom. Active learning methods that will be discussed are as follows: 1. Dialogue with Self; 2. Dialogue with Others; 3. Observing; 4. Doing. Active learning strategies (definitions and rationale) that will be discussed: 1. Chunking; 2. Organizing; 3. Activating; 4. Activating Prior Knowledge; 5. Elaborating; 6. Emphasizing; 7. Rationale; 8. Repeating; 9. Advanced Organizer.
