Synopsis: As diverse student populations grow to include an increasing number of non-traditional adult learners, and both the traditional and non-traditional college experience shifts to more online learning environments, we must consider new ways of supporting students and their career development with appropriate multicultural counseling practices. In 2012, over 32% of college students had taken at least one class online. This changing landscape demands an adaptive approach without sacrificing the considerations of each individual culture and background. Without the luxuries of face-to-face communication, knowing and understanding a student’s background and unique situation becomes more difficult, as does utilizing a customized approach to services. We will explore techniques and tools to successfully discern important information related to cultural influences and personal situations. Ultimately, participants will be equipped with specific implementations strategies to ensure that all students are receiving support that aligns with their background, regardless of their preferred modality for seeking services.
