Date: 11/5/15
TLC Track: High Impact Online Teaching & Learning Practices
Synopsis: This presentation provides attendees with methods and practices to integrate disrupting video with active teaching to provide students with invaluable real-world learning opportunities. Today technology is the number one driver of change and it is also driving change in the classroom. Video is emerging as a logical choice and we have been active and successful presenting various formats. Gerri Baum in his presentation, "The Power of Video in Social Media" tells us that video offers high impact and it is the most powerful on-demand communication platform. There are three primary modalities through which people take in information: visual, auditory and tactile. People will generally remember: 10% of what they read 20% of what they hear 30% of what they see 50% of what they hear and see. The benefits of video where much of the content is conveyed visually is immediately apparent for visually-oriented learners while the inclusion of sound and speech benefits auditory learners and can provide demonstrations not otherwise possible in classrooms for tactile learners. According to a summary of research and educator surveys, top six reasons to use video in the course room allows instructors to: 1. Expand student experiences beyond the classroom 2. Address different learning styles 3. Inform curriculum with real-world tie-ins 4. Enhance understanding and retention 5. Encourage student participation 6. Engage and motivate. Attendees of this presentation will learn how to integrate real-world learning experiences in the classroom through the use of video.
